Title

Rosa Rodriguez Complete Interview

Description

This interview with Rosa Rodriguez took place on October 20, 2013 in Buffalo, NY and was conducted by Stephanie Bucalo. Rosa Rodriguez was born in Puerto Rico in a small town on top of a mountain. She moved to the United States in 1952 after her brother was killed in a plane accident. She came from a very poor family and would not have been able to come to the United States had the airline not paid for their tickets. She first lived on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in a predominantly Puerto Rican neighborhood and then later moved to Buffalo to be with her second husband. She was 30 years old when she came to New York. Rosa struggled to participate in the interview. She had a hard time remembering details so her daughter and granddaughter helped finish the interview. Her daughter shared many experiences living in Manhattan and then eventually moving to Buffalo. Neither she nor her mother originally wanted to move to Buffalo since they prefered a larger city atmosphere, but they both eventually became accustomed to Buffalo. Thalía, Rosa’s granddaughter, shared stories of her childhood and the struggles she went through. Thalía was first educated in a Buffalo Public School but then moved to Kenmore with her family where she felt the most discrimination. She was one of the only minority students in her school and was almost pushed out of her district because of racism. She learned justice at a very young age and stood up for her family because she knew the school district was wrong. Thalía also shares her feelings about being biracial in the Puerto Rican community.
