Project historian, Stephanie Bucalo, conducted the interview. Andres was born in Puerto Rico where he spent many of his adolescent years living on the streets. He moved to Buffalo, NY in 1968 at the age of 18. Upon arriving in Buffalo, Andres successfully found employment despite failing physical fitness tests for industrial positions due to his impaired vision. Andres admits to struggling with substance addiction but eventually realizes that he wants to get clean and succeeds. He reached out to the community and his connections to secure resources to begin a non profit organization dedicated to providing much needed AIDS support services to the growing Hispanic community. Andres retired from his public service work, but found it to be too boring. He has since returned to work in City Hall in Workforce Development. He also discusses other non profit organizations and festivals that were created during his time working in the community. Andres had to walk from the Lower Westside of Buffalo (LWS) to the hospital located in Kenmore (a suburb of Buffalo.) He admits that his English was horrible in the 1970s, but learned from books he took out of the library and by watching Sesame Street. After getting his Associate's Degree, he got a job with the Community Action Organization (CAO) as a drug counselor. With the help of grant writers from Albany and a group of motivated community members, they proposed the program La Alternativa (which is now Hispanics United today). He describes a "Drug supermarket" on the corner of Virginia Street and West Avenue. He felt the government needed to intercede. He went to City Hall and asked them to put a few police officers in front of the store. After one year, the store was no longer a "drug supermarket". During the mid-80's AIDS became a major concern within the Hispanic community. Many families did not know how to treat not only the sickness but the emotional needs of the infected people. The grant funded the purchase of a van, which would travel around the city offering support to individuals and families afflicted with AIDS. Andres explains that addicts are very difficult to locate and will not willingly seek help. They would find them on the street corners. The counselors would offer condoms, AIDS tests and other valuable resources. They would return a week later with the results. Andres admits to being a part of the "drug crowd" when he first arrived in Buffalo, but has since turned into an advocate for drug rehabilitation and eradication on the LWS. At this point, Andres decided to get clean and start working to end drug distribution on the streets and to help end the brutality that police officers were using which, at the time seemed largely directed at the Hispanic community. Andres admits to being a part of the "drug crowd" when he first arrived in Buffalo, but has since turned into an advocate for drug rehabilitation and eradication on the LWS. The Buffalo Police attacked a drug addict on Virginia Street and beat him so badly that he needed to take him to the hospital. This attack greatly upset the Hispanic community because of the level of brutality. At this point, Andres decided to get clean and start working to end drug distribution on the streets and to help end the brutality that police officers were using which, at the time seemed largely directed at the Hispanic community. Project historian, Stephanie Bucalo, conducted the interview. Andres was born in Puerto Rico where he spent many of his adolescent years living on the streets. He moved to Buffalo, NY in 1968 at the age of 18. Upon arriving in Buffalo, Andres successfully found employment despite failing physical fitness tests for industrial positions due to his impaired vision. Andres admits to struggling with substance addiction but eventually realizes that he wants to get clean and succeeds. He reached out to the community and his connections to secure resources to begin a non profit organization dedicated to providing much needed AIDS support services to the growing Hispanic community. Andres retired from his public service work, but found it to be too boring. He has since returned to work in City Hall in Workforce Development. He also discusses other non profit organizations and festivals that were created during his time working in the community.
