                <text>The Pentecostal Church is one of many sects of Christianity practiced by Hispanics in Western New York. In 1952, the first Pentecostal Church was established in Buffalo under the Concilio Latinoamericano. The Pentecostal Church provided structure and community for its followers and also encouraged parents to maintain the Spanish language within their homes. It has been believed that the Pentecostal Church really focused on supporting the Spanish speaking community and more readily addressed its needs.</text>

                <text>Raul Russi was the first Puerto Rican police officer in the City of Buffalo. He became a political activist and helped elect the first Hispanic judge in the City's history. He served as the Assistant Superintendent of the Erie County Correctional Facility and was later promoted to Superintendent. He then became the chairman of the Parole Board and the first Latino sheriff in New York City. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani nominated Raul to become the Commissioner of the Probation Board for New York City. He was then appointed as the CEO of Acacia in New York City. He then became a part of BASIC and Promesa, two New York City based non-profit organizations that focus on services in the area of health, housing, and economic development. He ran for State Assembly of the 146th District in 1983.</text>

                <text>The Hispanic Women's League was formed in 1979 by a group of professional Latinas who wanted to provided financial assistance to younger Latinas to be "more than just housewives". At this time women were becoming more involved in professional careers and wanted to encourage other women to pursue their career dreams instead of assuming traditional gender roles. The League provides numerous scholarships each year for young Latinas to attend a local college and then asks them to return to Buffalo and work towards making it a better place.</text>

                <text>Herman Badillo Community School was the location of the first bilingual education program in Western New York and began in 1971. It was named after the first Puerto Rican to be elected as New York City Borough President of the Bronx and as a United States Representative. He was also the first Puerto Rican to run for Mayor in a major U.S. city. Herman Badillo Community School provided bilingual services to students who wished to maintain the Spanish but also learn fluent English. It also provided a location for non-Spanish speaking Hispanics to learn the Spanish Language. To this day, it remains a community school and is now one of two bilingual programs in the City of Buffalo.</text>
