Benjamin Matta Complete Interview

This interview with Benjamin Matta took place on August 7, 2013 at his home in Hamburg, NY and was conducted by Stephanie Bucalo. Benjamin Matta was born in Puerto Rico and came to the Brooklyn with the rest of his family after his father found employment there. They lived in Brooklyn for about 3 years and then later relocated to Lackawanna, NY because Bethlehem Steel was hiring. Benjamin’s father, Luis, worked at Bethlehem Steel for 33 years. Luis later became a minister which was his true vocation. Benjamin shares stories of growing up in an English only environment once he arrived in Buffalo. He uses his experiences as a benchmark for how education has changed over the decades. They didn’t have access to bilingual education and students had to go “cold turkey” in order to succeed in school. This influenced his feelings on how community should approach education. Benjamin was the first Hispanic to enter politics in Western New York and held both local and State offices. He used his campaign for district councilman as a way to educate the Hispanic population about registering to vote and actually participating in the voting process. He explains why this was challenging to the Hispanic population and was very successful during his campaign. He explains how to navigate the political system as well as support to the community. Benjamin also share stories about the Pentecostal Church. His family was very involved in the establishment of various churches across the city. His father was a very well respected minister as was his aunt. Benjamin converted to two other sects of Christianity throughout his life, but always remained faithful. He too is now a minister. He helped form a church that was more liberal than a traditional Pentecostal Church but structured like a Methodist Church. To this day he continues to help people in the community to understand the importance of voting and always had the paperwork on hand at his church and in his car for whenever he meets someone who needs to register.

Esta entrevista con Benjamin Matta tomó lugar el 7 de agosto del año 2013 en su casa en Hamburg, NY y fue conducida por Stephanie Bucalo. Benjamin Matta nació en Puerto Rico y vino a Brooklyn con el resto de su familia después de cuando su padre encontró empleo ahí. Ellos vivieron en Brooklyn por más o menos 3 años y luego se mudaron a Lackawanna, NY porque Bethlehem Steel empleaba a muchos trabajadores. El padre de Benjamin, Luis, trabajaba a Bethlehem Steel por 33 años. Más tarde, Luis se puso ministro lo cual era su verdadera vocación. Benjamin comparte las historias de su crecimiento dentro de un ambiente de sólo inglés cuando primero llegó a Búfalo. Él usa sus experiencias como punto de referencia para explicar cómo el sistema educativo ha cambiado por las décadas. Ellos no tuvieron acceso a la educación bilingüe y los estudiantes tuvieron que ir al estilo “pavo frío” en el fin de tener éxito en la escuela. Su experiencia influyó sus sentimientos en cómo la comunidad debe acercarse a la educación. Benjamin era el primer hispano a entrar en las políticas en Nueva York del Oeste y mantuvo la oficina al nivel municipal y estatal. Él usaba su campaña para concejal distrito para enseñar a los hispanos la importancia de registrar para votar y la participación actual del voto. Él explica por qué este era un desafío a la población hispana y tuvo mucho éxito durante su campaña. Él explica cómo navegar el sistema político tanto como apoyar a la comunidad. Su padre era un ministro bien respetado tanto como era su tía. Benjamin se convirtió a dos otras sectas de la cristiandad pero siempre mantuvo su fidelidad a la iglesia. Él también se puso ministro ahora. Él ayudó a establecer una iglesia que era más liberal que la Iglesia Pentecostal tradicional pero estructurada más como una iglesia metodista. Hasta hoy en día él sigue ayudando a la gente entender la importancia del voto y siempre tiene los papels en mano a su iglesia y en su coche para cuando conoce a alguien que necesita registrarse.
