This interview with Sergio Rodriguez took place on February 27, 2014 at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library in Buffalo, NY and was conducted by Stephanie Bucalo. Sergio was born in the Bellavista neighborhood in Santiago, Dominican Republic. He arrived in the United States at the age of ten with his sister in 1990. His parents arrived in the United States two years prior to his arrival and worked to save enough money to call for Sergio and his sister. Sergio describes some of his original reservations about coming to the United States and how he was raised to overcome many social obstacles in school, in the community and throughout his adulthood. Neither of Sergio´s parents finished high school but knew that education was the key to helping their children advance in life. After graduation Sergio enlisted in the Marines and after serving 5 years of active duty he went on to college and then found his way into the political scene in Buffalo, NY. Sergio give a great deal of credit to his parents for helping him succeed in life and for teaching him to be humble but very hard working. Sergio describes his route to his political career and some of the social concerns that came into play during his journey. He also discusses his views on Buffalo and how to make it a better place, largely through educational reform.

Esta entrevista con Sergio Rodríguez tomó lugar el 27 de febrero de 2014 a la Biblioteca Central de Búfalo en Búfalo, NY y fue conducida por Stephanie Bucalo. Sergio nació en el vecindario de Bellavista en la ciudad de Santiago, la República Dominicana. Él llegó a los Estados Unidos a la edad de 10 con su hermana en el año 1990. Sus padres llegaron dos años antes para trabajar y guardar suficiente dinero para llamar a Sergio y su hermana. Sergio describe algunas de sus reservaciones originales sobre la idea de venir a los Estados Unidos y cómo fue crecido de superar muchos obstáculos sociales en la escuela, en la comunidad y por toda su edad adulta. Ninguno de los padres de Sergio terminó la secundaria pero sabían que la educación era la clave de ayudar a sus hijos tener éxito en la vida. Después de graduarse de la secundaria, Sergio se inscribió a las Marinas y después de cumplir 5 años de servicio activo él entró a la universidad y luego encontró su camino a la escena política en Búfalo, NY. Sergio les da mucho crédito a sus padres para ayudarlo tener éxito en su vida y por enseñarle que hay que ser humilde pero al mismo tiempo, trabajar duro. Sergio describe su camino a su carrera política y algunas de sus preocupaciones sociales que vinieron a la escena durante su camino. Él también discute sus perspectivas sobre Búfalo y cómo mejorarla, largamente por la reforma educativa.
