Herman Badillo Community School : Photo Album
Description
Herman Badillo Community School was the location of the first bilingual education program in Western New York and began in 1971. It was named after the first Puerto Rican to be elected as New York City Borough President of the Bronx and as a United States Representative. He was also the first Puerto Rican to run for Mayor in a major U.S. city. Herman Badillo Community School provided bilingual services to students who wished to maintain the Spanish but also learn fluent English. It also provided a location for non-Spanish speaking Hispanics to learn the Spanish Language. To this day, it remains a community school and is now one of two bilingual programs in the City of Buffalo.
