Enrique Padilla

This interview took place on September 15, 2012 with Enrique Padilla Sr. and Jr. at Enrique Jr.’s home on Woodside Avenue in Buffalo, NY. Enrique Sr. was born in Puerto Rico and migrated to Michigan in 1949. He later migrated again to Brooklyn, NY where he had family members already living and working and then to Lackawanna where he established a home for his family. Enrique Sr. worked for New York Central and was paid a higher salary than what he was originally offered through his agricultural contract which brought him to the United States in 1949. Enrique Sr. worked on the farms in North Collins first before obtaining employment at New York Central. Employment at New York Central provided a much better salary for him and his family. Enrique Sr. was very uncomfortable during this interview. His son, Enrique Jr., was kind enough to answer questions for and about his father as well as about his own life growing up in Western New York. Enrique Jr. arrived in Lackawanna when he was 12 years old. He and his family originally lived in the predominantly Puerto Rican neighborhood on the Lower East Side until they relocated to the Lower West Side which was becoming progressively more and more Puerto Rican. Enrique Jr. describes the various forms of discrimination that Puerto Ricans faced in both locations and the methods they used to overcome them. The majority of this interview focuses on labor, community building and cultural acclamation. Enrique Jr. explains his own employment experiences as well as his wife’s and his father’s. He also gives a strong overview of life in Lackawanna during the mid-twentieth century. He describes the social, political and economic nature of the city based on its relationship to companies such as Bethlehem Steel, Ford Motor Company and New York Central, to name a few. He then concludes by talking about how the Hispanic community has changed over the years, what still remains and what it is lacking.

Esta entrevista tomó lugar el 15 de septiembre de 2012 con Enrique Padilla Mayor y Menor en la casa de Enrique Menor en Búfalo, NY. Enrique Mayor nació en Puerto Rico y migró a Michigan en el año 1949. Más tarde él migró otra vez a Brooklyn, NY donde ya tuvo familia trabajando y viviendo ahí, y luego migró a Lackawanna dónde él estableció un hogar para su familia.
