Blanca Rodriguez
This interview with Blanca Rodriguez took place August 28, 2012 at her home in Buffalo, NY by Stephanie Bucalo. Blanca arrived in Buffalo from Puerto Rico to reunite with her mother who originally moved here to start a life with her second husband. Blanca only intended on staying in Buffalo long enough to change her travel plans to France, where her first husband was stationed in the Army, but ended up staying indefinitely. Blanca completed her formal secondary education at Bennett High Night School in Buffalo and later became an employee of Western Electric for 12 years, the Department of Housing and Urban Development for 25 years and participated in different Hispanic nonprofit organizations in the effort to help advance the Hispanic community. Blanca was involved in Ayuda Mutua Puertorriqueña and the Hispanic Women’s League. (She was one of the original founders of the Hispanic Women’s League). Blanca also became a translator for Spanish only speaking people who needed help in places such as the Department of Social Services and medical facilities, to name a few. Blanca is a woman of many achievements and her list of philanthropic work is endless. She does not come out and directly say this in the interview, but her work reflects the burgeoning feminist sentiment of the seventies and eighties, much of this can be seen through her involvement in the Hispanic Women’s League. The Buffalo News released a story reporting negatively about bilingual education in the Buffalo Public Schools. A group of women became infuriated with the findings and decided to form an organization that would offer scholarships to young Hispanic women so they can think beyond being a homemaker. The organization was created to encourage young Hispanic women to enter the workforce as strong educated women who would then, upon graduation from a local university, return to the Hispanic community and contribute to its betterment. Many women started families very young and with little education, making it virtually impossible to find gainful employment outside of the service and labor industries. The Hispanic Women’s League promoted the professionalization of Hispanic women. Alongside Blanca’s philanthropic and community work, she also deeply enjoyed reading poetry. She was asked to read poetry on the Spanish language radio program in Niagara Falls, NY. She also gave beauty tips on the air.
