He went to City Hall and asked them to put a few police officers in front of the store. After one year, the store was no longer a \"drug supermarket\".

Many families did not know how to treat not only the sickness but the emotional needs of the infected people. The grant funded the purchase of a van, which would travel around the city offering support to individuals and families afflicted with AIDS. The program no longer exists.
\n\n
\n\n
9:52 - The van would travel around looking for potential clients
\n\n
The counselors would drive around in the van looking for people in need of their services. Andres explains that addicts are very difficult to locate and will not willingly seek help. They would find them on the street corners. The counselors would offer condoms, AIDS tests and other valuable resources. They would return a week later with the results.
\n\n
15:34 - The drug problems decreased but still existed
\n\n
After Andres left La Alternativa, the drug problems on the LWS still existed, but had since improved. He could still see people purchasing drugs at 5:00pm and then jumping back on the thruway to go to their homes. People from the outside were coming to the LWS to buy their drugs. Andres admits to being a part of the \"drug crowd\" when he first arrived in Buffalo, but has since turned into an advocate for drug rehabilitation and eradication on the LWS.

\n\n
20:20 - Police brutality against a drug addict aroused the leader in Andres
\n\n
Andres tells the story of how he became inspired to work for the community. The Buffalo Police attacked a drug addict on Virginia Street and beat him so badly that he needed to take him to the hospital. This attack greatly upset the Hispanic community because of the level of brutality. At this point, Andres decided to get clean and start working to end drug distribution on the streets and to help end the brutality that police officers were using which, at the time seemed largely directed at the Hispanic community.
