Olivia Padilla was born in Lackawanna to Spanish parents who migrated to the region after passing through Cuba before the Cuban Revolution. Olivia grew up in Lackawanna where she easily integrated into an English speaking environment. Her parents owned a poultry shop that sold fresh chicken to the community. When she was a child, she delivered the orders to their clients on her bike. Olivia discusses her family’s involvement in the Spanish and Mexican Clubs. She also describes different community events such as soccer. She also discusses the cultural differences between the Spanish and Puerto Ricans. Employment at Bethlehem Steel is a major point of conversation especially with respect to the women who worked there during World War II while the men were fighting abroad.
